Why this site exists

What we are

Ton to Kg is a set of free calculators for converting between tons and kilograms. There is no account system, no lead capture and no ranked table we are paid to place at the top. The entire product is the arithmetic, done correctly, with the conversion factor shown next to the result.

That matters more here than in most calculator categories, because 'ton' is ambiguous: a metric ton is 1,000 kg, a US short ton is 907.18474 kg and a UK long ton is 1,016.0469 kg. A converter that shows its working lets you check which ton a figure means rather than guess.

We are not a standards body, a shipping authority or a trade regulator, and we do not certify weights. Nothing on this site is professional or legal-for-trade measurement advice.

Conventions

The assumptions behind every calculation

  • Conversions follow the SI (International System of Units), the global standard maintained by the BIPM for the kilogram.

  • One metric ton (tonne, symbol t) is defined as exactly 1,000 kg — the default used across the site.

  • One US short ton is taken as exactly 907.18474 kg (2,000 lb), the value fixed by NIST.

  • One UK long ton is taken as exactly 1,016.0469 kg (2,240 lb).

  • All results use the exact constants rather than rounded factors, so figures match the definitions to full precision.

  • Where a source does not state which ton it means, the site defaults to the metric ton and flags the alternatives.

Step by step

    Identify which ton type the figure uses — metric, US short or UK long.

    Look up the exact kilograms-per-ton constant for that type.

    For tons to kilograms, multiply the ton figure by the constant.

    For kilograms to tons, divide the kilogram figure by the constant.

    Keep full precision through the calculation rather than rounding early.

    Round the final result only, to the precision your use case needs.

Limits

What this calculator cannot tell you

It cannot tell you which ton a source meant. If a document just says 'tons', you have to know whether it is metric, US short or UK long — every figure here depends on you picking the right one.

It cannot tell you a trade-legal weight. For customs, freight contracts or legal-for-trade weighing, the certified measurement on the document governs, not a converter.

It cannot tell you tare, net or gross distinctions, which depend on packaging and container weight. And it cannot tell you whether tons or kilograms is the right unit for your paperwork — that is a question about your industry's conventions, not about arithmetic.

For those questions, check the relevant standard or speak to a qualified measurement professional and confirm the unit basis directly on your documentation before relying on a figure.

Ali Raza builds fast, accessible calculation tools and content sites. Ton to Kg is his — every conversion on it is implemented from the exact SI and customary constants (1 t = 1,000 kg, 1 short ton = 907.18474 kg, 1 long ton = 1,016.0469 kg) rather than copied from another calculator, and every worked example is re-derived from that code before it ships.

Ton to Kg is published by Gem Programmers. Corrections are welcomed and acted on — if a figure here disagrees with a published standard, tell us on the contact page and we will re-derive it from the constant.
