How Many Kilograms Are in a Ton? A Complete Guide

It depends which ton you mean. A metric ton is 1,000 kg exactly. A US short ton is 907.18474 kg (2,000 lb). A UK long ton is 1,016.0469 kg (2,240 lb). To convert any ton to kilograms you multiply by its factor; to go from kilograms back you divide.

The short answer, all three tons

There is no single number, because "ton" names three different masses. The kilogram is the SI base unit and the fixed reference all three tons are measured against, so the cleanest way to answer the question is to give each ton's exact value in kilograms and then show how to move between them.

  • 1 metric ton (tonne, t) = 1,000 kg exactly.
  • 1 US short ton = 907.18474 kg (2,000 lb).
  • 1 UK long ton = 1,016.0469 kg (2,240 lb).

The metric ton: 1,000 kilograms

The metric ton is defined as 1,000 kilograms, so the conversion is exact and needs no rounding. Going from tonnes to kilograms is a multiplication by 1,000, and going from kilograms to tonnes is a division by 1,000. Three tonnes is 3,000 kg; 750 kg is 0.75 tonnes; 12,500 kg is 12.5 tonnes. Because the factor is a power of ten, the decimal point simply moves three places.

This is the most common meaning of "ton" outside the United States, and it is the one most likely to appear in scientific, industrial and international-trade figures. If your numbers are already in kilograms, the kg to metric tons tool performs the division and preserves the exact result rather than rounding it away.

The short ton: 907.18474 kilograms

The US short ton is 2,000 pounds. The international pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg, so 2,000 × 0.45359237 = 907.18474 kg. That makes the short ton about 93 kg lighter than a metric ton. To convert kilograms to short tons you divide by 907.18474: for example, 2,000 kg ÷ 907.18474 ≈ 2.2046 short tons, and 5,000 kg ÷ 907.18474 ≈ 5.5116 short tons.

Going the other way, one short ton in kilograms is simply 907.18474 kg, and 3 short tons is 3 × 907.18474 = 2,721.55422 kg. When you need this division done at full precision, the kg to US short tons page keeps every digit of the factor.

The long ton: 1,016.0469 kilograms

The UK long ton is 2,240 pounds, which at 0.45359237 kg per pound is 2,240 × 0.45359237 = 1,016.0469 kg. It is the heaviest of the three and sits about 16 kg above the metric ton. To convert kilograms to long tons, divide by 1,016.0469; for instance, 2,000 kg ÷ 1,016.0469 ≈ 1.9684 long tons.

The long ton appears mostly in older British records and some maritime measures. In most modern contexts the metric ton has taken its place, but if a document specifies "long ton" or "imperial ton," use 1,016.0469 kg rather than the metric 1,000.

Converting in either direction

The rule is symmetric and holds for all three tons: multiply by the factor to turn tons into kilograms, and divide by the same factor to turn kilograms into tons. The factor is the ton's value in kilograms — 1,000, 907.18474 or 1,016.0469. Once you know which ton the number refers to, the arithmetic is a single operation.

One ton in kilograms, and how to convert either way

Metric ton (tonne, t)1,000÷ 1,000× 1,000
US short ton907.18474÷ 907.18474× 907.18474

Pick the right ton before you calculate

The most common conversion mistake is not the arithmetic but the assumption — dividing a US weight by 1,000 as if it were metric, or treating an imported metric figure as short tons. Confirm the ton type first, then apply the matching factor. A number labelled just "ton" in a US source is usually a short ton; in a source from almost anywhere else it is usually a metric ton.

If you are still unsure which "ton" a source means, the companion guide what is a ton walks through how to tell them apart by country and context before you touch a calculator.

Frequently asked

  • Exactly 1,000 kilograms. The metric ton, or tonne, is defined as a decimal multiple of the kilogram, so there is no rounding involved. Converting is a shift of the decimal point: multiply tonnes by 1,000 to get kilograms, or divide kilograms by 1,000 to get tonnes.
