Metric Ton vs. Short Ton: Why the Difference Matters in Shipping
A metric ton is 1,000 kg and a US short ton is 907.18474 kg, so the metric ton is about 10.2% heavier. In shipping that gap compounds across a full load: treating one as the other can misstate cargo weight by tonnes, throwing off freight charges, load limits and customs paperwork.

The two tons at a glance
In freight the word "ton" hides a real difference. A metric ton is exactly 1,000 kilograms. A US short ton is 907.18474 kilograms, defined as 2,000 pounds at 0.45359237 kg each. The metric ton is heavier by 1,000 − 907.18474 = 92.81526 kg, which is about 10.2% of a short ton (92.81526 ÷ 907.18474 ≈ 0.10231). On a single unit that gap is easy to shrug off; across a shipload it is not.

How the gap compounds across a load
The 10.2% difference is per ton, so it scales with the size of the shipment. Suppose a manifest lists 500 tons of cargo. If those are metric tons, the load is 500 × 1,000 = 500,000 kg. If they are short tons, the load is 500 × 907.18474 = 453,592.37 kg. The two readings differ by more than 46,000 kg — over 46 metric tons of phantom or missing weight created purely by the label.
That is why a shipping figure should never be moved between systems by eye. Converting 453,592.37 kg back to short tons with the kg to US short tons tool returns the original 500, whereas dividing it by 1,000 would wrongly report 453.6 metric tons. The factor you divide by has to match the unit the number was recorded in.
Where the confusion actually bites
The error rarely announces itself. It shows up downstream, in the places where cargo weight drives a decision or a cost.
- Freight rates quoted per ton: a rate assumed to be per short ton but applied to metric tons over-charges by about 10.2%.
- Vehicle and vessel load limits: a truck rated in metric tons will be overloaded if cargo was weighed in the heavier assumption and mislabelled.
- Customs and manifests: declared weights that mix systems can trigger discrepancies, inspections and re-weighing fees.
- Commodity contracts: a price per ton means very different money depending on whether "ton" is metric or short.
A worked conversion both ways
Start with a container weighed at 25,000 kg. In metric tons that is 25,000 ÷ 1,000 = 25 tonnes exactly. In short tons it is 25,000 ÷ 907.18474 ≈ 27.56 short tons. Same physical container, two correct numbers — and if a document simply said "25 tons" without specifying which, a reader could be off by 2.56 tons before doing anything wrong arithmetically.
Reverse the process to check yourself: 27.56 × 907.18474 ≈ 25,002 kg and 25 × 1,000 = 25,000 kg, both landing back at the original weight within rounding. Good practice for freight documents
The fix is discipline about labels, not cleverer math. Always state the ton type explicitly — "metric tons" or "MT" for the tonne, "short tons" or "ST" for the US ton — and, where space allows, record the weight in kilograms as well, since the kilogram is unambiguous. When you receive a figure in "tons," resolve which ton it is before converting.
