The History of the Ton: How an Ancient Unit Became a Modern Freight Standard

From a cask of wine to a unit of weight

The ton is older than the metric system, older than the pound as we now define it, and it did not start as a weight at all. It began as the "tun" — a large wooden cask used to ship wine. The number of tuns a vessel could carry became a way to describe the ship's capacity, and from that maritime accounting the word slid from a measure of space into a measure of weight for the cargo itself.

That origin explains why the ton has always lived closest to freight and trade rather than the laboratory. The long ton: Britain's 2,240 pounds

As the tun settled into a weight, England fixed it in pounds. The English system counted heavy goods in hundredweights of 112 pounds, and twenty of those made a ton: 2,240 pounds. That is the long ton, and using the international pound of 0.45359237 kilograms it comes to exactly 1,016.0469 kilograms. Britain codified this ton in its weights-and-measures law, and it governed British and colonial trade for generations.

The 112-pound hundredweight looks odd now, but it came from older systems of stones and quarters that divided neatly in that scheme. The long ton is not a mistake or a rounding — it is a fully consistent unit built on a hundredweight that happens to be larger than the one America would later choose.

The short ton: America rounds down

American commerce simplified the hundredweight to a round 100 pounds. Twenty of those make 2,000 pounds — the short ton — which converts to exactly 907.18474 kilograms. It was the natural ton for a country that liked to count in even hundreds of pounds, and it became the standard for domestic US freight, mining, and construction. So by the 19th century the English-speaking world had two tons that shared a name but differed by 240 pounds — about 108.86 kilograms. The long ton was the heavier British unit; the short ton was the lighter American one. Neither had anything to do with the metric system that was rising across the Channel.
