Why Does the US Use 'Short Tons' While Most of the World Uses Metric Tons?

Three tons, one word
The word "ton" hides three different weights. The metric ton, or tonne, is 1,000 kilograms exactly. The US short ton is 2,000 pounds, which works out to 907.18474 kilograms. The British long ton is 2,240 pounds, or 1,016.0469 kilograms. All three are called a ton in ordinary speech, and only context tells you which one is meant.
The United States settled on the short ton; most of the rest of the world settled on the metric ton. Why 2,000 pounds felt natural
America inherited English weights and measures, and in that system everything was counted in pounds. A ton was simply a large, round pile of pounds — and 2,000 is a rounder, easier number than the older 2,240. For a country doing commerce in pounds and hundredweights, defining the ton as twenty 100-pound hundredweights was tidy bookkeeping. That practical choice is the whole origin of the short ton.
Britain, by contrast, kept the long ton of 2,240 pounds, built from a 112-pound hundredweight. Both tons predate metrication, and both are just different ways of bundling the same pound. Because the pound itself was fixed internationally in 1959 at exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, every ton built on it now has an exact metric value — the short ton lands on 907.18474 kg and not a rounder figure.

Why the US never switched
The metric ton spread with the metric system through the 19th and 20th centuries, and country after country adopted it as the standard large unit of mass. The United States legally recognises metric units and uses them heavily in science and trade, but everyday industry — construction, freight, waste, agriculture — kept running on customary units, and the short ton came along for the ride.

How to keep the two straight
The reliable move is to convert through kilograms rather than trying to jump ton-to-ton. To go from short tons to metric tons, multiply by 907.18474 to reach kilograms, then divide by 1,000: 50 short tons is 45,359.237 kg, or about 45.36 metric tons. Skipping the kilogram step is where people quietly lose or gain nearly ten percent.
